After a rope-fixing crew ascended the peak last month, Nepal has granted 59 allows to international climbers for Makalu, and several of them have already reached the summit.

A significant number of fatalities in the Himalayas are related to Nepali guides and porters, highlighting the risk they bear for the aspirations of hundreds of paying climbers seeking to summit the tallest mountains on the planet.

With eight of the the globe’s fourteen tallest peaks located in Nepal, hundreds of hikers have descended on the country to train for heights during the spring climbing season, which is marked by pleasant weather and often quiet winds.

This year, Nepal has given more than 900 licences for its peaks, 414 of which are for Everest, bringing in more than $5 million in revenues.
