Threatened to kill 287 students if they do not pay $622,000 ransom

Nigeria: The abductors who abducted 287 pupils from Nigeria last Thursday have requested a ransom for 622,000 dollars, or one billion Naira. If their demands were not fulfilled, they threatened to kill all of the kidnapped children. This was said on Wednesday by a member of the local Kuriga community, and CNN reported the story.

Around 4:30 PM on Tuesday, the abductors allegedly contacted and wanted a ransom of one billion Naira. It is reported that 20 days or three weeks have passed after the kidnapping for ransom. The kidnappers are alleged to have threatened to murder every child if the government did not intervene. The kidnapping occurred on March 7.

According to the abductor organisation, he was kidnapped as payback for killing a member of their group. Last Thursday, almost 300 children from the nearby LEA primary and secondary schools were kidnapped in the morning by armed individuals riding motorbikes. While 287 of them are still in the hands of the abductors, some of them have been freed.

Approximately one hundred of the kidnapped children attend elementary school. It is stated that the remainder are from secondary schools. Governor of Kaduna State Uba Sani has stated that every effort is being made by his administration to ensure the children’s safe return. The state is situated on the southwest edge of Nigeria’s capital, Abuja.

Kidnapping cases and ransom demands have grown in this area in recent times. About 140 pupils were kidnapped from a private secondary school in 2021 by armed guys. The event happened a few months after gunmen abducted twenty students from a private institution.
