New York: On Friday, Yao Pan Ma, 61, was attacked in New York City.
As he lay on the street, the attacker can be seen continuously trampling on Ma’s head.
Ma’s condition was serious but balanced as of Monday. The assailant is being investigated by the police.
According to local media, a 61-year-old Asian man was critically injured after a violent assault in New York City’s Harlem a neighbourhood.
A man identified as Yao Pan Ma is continuously kicked in the head while on the ground, according to video that was released by the New York City Police Department.
The assailant allegedly hit Ma from behind and pushed him to the ground, according to the police.
According to CBS New York and the New York Daily News, Ma was walking with a shopping basket full of cans and bottles when the attack happened.
As per the NYPD, the attack happened around 8:20 p.m. on Friday.
Surveillance video shows the assailant continuously kicking on Ma’s head before fleeing as Ma lay on the street.
A man wearing a red-and-black baseball cap, a dark jacket, dark jeans, and white sneakers was later identified by the NYPD.
They said that the attacker was a man.
In a Saturday post, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called the attack “outrageous,” adding, “Make no mistake, we will find the perpetrator and they will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
A crowdfunding for Ma’s family had raised more than $345,000 as of Tuesday morning. On Monday, the campaign was launched.
The attack comes in the wake a series of attacks in the United States against Asians. A 65-year-old Filipina American woman was mocked and assaulted in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen neighbourhood last month.
