Protests have been staged in Kapilvastu against the dismissal of the Land Problem Resolution Commission. Nirupat Tharu, chairperson of the Land Rights Forum Kapilvastu, said that they were protesting against the abolition of the commission with placards under the slogan “Safe Home for All, Arable Land to Farmers”.
During the protest organized by District Land Rights Forum Kapilvastu in Gorusinghe on Saturday, the protesters chanted slogans against the government and will continue their agitation till the commission is re-established, said Chairman Tharu. Ensure representation of land rights forum in the commission, smooth the work of local government related to land, implement data collection, measurement, and distribution of red card.
Similarly, form land-related commission immediately, do not harass landless again and again, maintain joint red card stated Manju Tharu, district secretary of the Land Rights Forum.
She also informed that the people without red cards staged a protest with placards with slogans such as “We don’t need a government of dictator Deuba”. Secretary Tharu also said that the protest program has turned into a corner rally by circling Gorusinge Bazaar area from Gorusinge Arghakhanchi Chowk.
Central member of the forum Jasbir Bard said that the squatters were disappointed after the previous government formed a commission to resolve land issues after a long workout. He said that despite the change of government, the hopes of the people without red card have turned into despair.
Member Bard also demanded immediate formation of the commission and continuation of the work done by the commission.
Similarly, Bikas Acharya, Ward Chairman of ward no. 3 Buddhabhumi Municipality said that it was in the political interest of the current government to dismiss the commission after the government has given the responsibility to the local level to distribute red cards to squatters, Dalits, and unorganized settlers.
Stating that they are hoping to get the red card by dismissing the constitutional commission formed by the outgoing government. Acharya demanded that the commission be continued immediately as it has interfered with the fundamental rights of the citizens.
According to Kapilvastu, the land rights forum has demanded to make the structure of the commission independent and capable by encouraging the implementation of the plan and budget targeted at the local level and the state government in favor of landless, Dalits, landless, and squatters in the current fiscal year.
In the meanwhile, even after filling the form many times, there was a great hope of getting the red card now. However, the locals of Buddhabhumi Municipality- 3 complained that the government’s decision has inflicted heavy losses on the squatters. They also said, “Doesn’t the coalition government need a squatter vote?”
The government led by former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had formed a commission to distribute land to landless Dalits and squatters. But the current coalition government has decided to dismiss the commission on August 3.
