Why mention “Tharu” in a surname? The Horizon Times, News of Nepal

Nepal: Awareness and training program related to 12th National Census 2078 BS has been completed. According to the organizers, public awareness and training program was organized by Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha Shivraj Municipality and Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha Vijayanagar Village Working Committee on Saturday at Chandrauta in Kapilvastu under the slogan ‘Our Counting, Our Participation’.

Janjir Prasad Tharu, a member of the Tharu Welfare Assembly, said that in the current census, the Tharu castes should write their last name as Chaudhary, Dahit, Rana, Gachhedar, Katharia, Rautar and Mahato. He said that in order to save the existence of his Tharu caste, it was necessary to add the word Tharu.

“When one’s own caste ceases to exist, a change of surname destroys the culture and existence of the Tharu community, so it is wrong to change one’s last name,” he said. He also expressed concern that the culture, dress and attire of the Tharu caste could not be eradicated if the Tharu surname was changing. Member Tharu requested all Tharus to fully participate in this census.
